Course Description

The validity of an assessment centre is partly down to the reliability and suitability of the materials used, but more importantly it is the role of the Assessor that makes the most impact on the effectiveness of the assessment event.

The role of the competency based Assessor is incredibly important. They are there to observe, record, classify, evaluate and integrate results whilst remaining objective, unbiased and neutral. We will share with the delegates how to observe and record evidence effectively. We will share with delegates how to take comprehensive, verbatim notes, write down exactly what has been said and done, whilst actively listening to candidates. We will also ensure delegates are aware of how to classify candidates against competencies; using indicators and interpreting evidence of competencies; and how to use the agreed rating scale with relative positive and negative weightings.

As well as understanding their key role in assessment, the training course will highlight to delegates the potential for biases to disrupt a clear and objective assessment process. We will explain the differences between biases such as:

  • First Impression;
  • Stereotypes;
  • Like You/Me;
  • Halo/Horns;
  • Primacy, Recency and Contrast Effects.

To complete the training course, we will share how to evaluate an assessment process, whilst suspending judgement and citing key evidence. We will explain how to score candidates, bearing in mind benchmarks, and how to present the resultant information.
